I still remember the day that I quit my job at a Fortune 500 company to start my business.

In fact, I’m going to let you in on a secret. I almost closed the doors to my business less than one month after they opened. I was overwhelmed and unhappy and broke.

I didn’t carefully phase out of my life as a business attorney into becoming a business owner. Nope! One day, my boss called me into her office and told me that there was a restructuring. She sat there laying out this terrible plan for what was about to become my life and I just…couldn’t. So I didn’t. I quit and she made it immediate.

While my husband and I did more than fine with a double income, THINGS WERE TIGHT with mine out of the picture. I was motivated and determined to make it work. More like it HAD to work. So I threw myself into it – doing ANY and EVERY thing that sounded like it should help me grow my business.

I took on ANY client that I could.
I marketed to EVERY person that I could.
I networked at EVERY group I could find.
I wore ALL of the hats in my business: admin assistant, website & graphics designer, social media manager, bookkeeper.

While I had clients, there was no rhyme or reason to how it was all happening. It seemed to be the result of luck more than anything and they weren’t even my ideal clients.

After I yelled at my husband FOR BRINGING ME THE WRONG FLAVOR ICE CREAM (who does that?!) I sat down and gave my business a hard look and what I saw wasn’t pretty.

The fact that my business wasn’t where I wanted it to be wasn’t the fault of anything other than ME. I was standing in my own way.

I was tricking myself into believing that I was showing up fully for my business because my calendar was full and my to-do list long. But the truth was, I wasn’t. I was jumping from this thing to that thing – switching between the types of clients I served, my offers, my pricing, how I was getting visible, where I was networking, how I was nurturing relationships – and not letting any one thing play out. Meaning I was consistent with nothing.

So, I took a deep breath and I hired my first business coach!

It was the scariest decision I had ever made (next to quitting my job)! It was definitely the biggest investment I had ever made! I remember telling her that I needed to talk with my husband first and calling him and begging him to talk me out of it - because I didn't feel like we could afford it! But my husband responded that he didn't see how we COULDN'T afford it - that the time I'd take figuring it out on my own any longer than I already had would cost us much more! And I'm SO glad he talked me into it!

Working with my coach allowed me to realize that, in my previous life as an attorney, I had NO problems making fast decisions and implementing quickly but, as a business owner, I constantly second guessed myself!
